The High Court (HC) Tuesday issued a rule-nisi upon the government to show cause within two weeks as to why criminal and departmental proceedings should not be initiated against the police personnel who brutally tortured Shaheen Sultana Shanta on March 12, reports BDNEWS.
Shanta was tortured and injured by the police during the March 12 siege programme of the Election Commission (EC) office by the opposition.
The HC also ordered the government not to harass or arrest Shanta without judicial inquiry in any case.
After hearing a writ petition filed by Shanta, a division bench of the High Court comprising Justice Awlad Ali and Justice Zinat Ara also directed the law-enforcing agencies not to arrest or enter the premises of Shanta's house and her family members or harass or humiliate her in anyway without taking permission of the court.
In the rule, the HC ordered the respondents of the rule to show cause as to why the inhuman and cruel behaviour of the police on the petitioner should not be declared as violation of the constitution, the Police Regulation of Bengal (PRB) and relevant laws.
