Shamsher Chy to brief on Bangladesh's role in war on terror in US
3/29/2006

The government has taken initiative to restore its image, tarnished badly by the rise in militant activities across the country, reports BDNEWS.
Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States, Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, will hold a press conference next Monday (April 3), at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, US, Foreign Ministry sources said.
"Chowdhury will discuss the role of Bangladesh, a Muslim majority democracy, in the global war on terror," an official of the Foreign Ministry told the news agency.
He is likely to focus on the recent crackdown on the militants, including arrest of JMB supremo Shaekh Abdur Rahman and his main operatives.
Chowdhury will also inform the US media of the country's history of gender equality, including the fact that the country is being ruled by women prime ministers since 1991, and other achievements made in social sectors.
Sources said the government has shifted from its policy to overcome the image crisis abroad by welcoming foreign journalists paving the way for publishing reports in the world's leading media on its success against militancy.
As part of the step of the government in restoring the image of country, the government had permitted Alex Perry of the Time magazine to come to Bangladesh last week. He interviewed Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
At the same time, reports about the steps of the government in resisting the militancy have been released through several websites.
