Arresting Shaekh Rahman is a drama staged by PM: Jalil
3/3/2006

Awami League (AL) general secretary Abdul Jalil MP termed the arrest of JMB chief Shaekh Abdur Rahman a "drama staged by the Prime Minister" and people clearly saw through her 'conspiracy', reports UNB.
"Prime Minister, you have staged the drama in the name of arresting JMB supremo Shaekh Abdur Rahman, which has become crystal clear to the people," Jalil said at a protest rally at the city's Muktangon Thursday afternoon.
Dhaka City 14-party combine organised the rally to protest the crisis of electricity, water, fuel, fertiliser, seeds and daily necessities.
"Whom do you want to please by the arrest drama? Do you think people are fool? People are not satisfied with your arrest drama as they could have understood your conspiracy," the AL leader said.
"Maybe, you will be able to satisfy those who will help you cling to power, but you could not please the common man," said Jalil, a key player in the anti-government opposition movement.
Meanwhile, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, political secretary (PS) to the Leader of the Opposition, posed several queries about the arrest of JMB chief and wondered how the country's most wanted fugitive could live with his family in such a posh house in Sylhet.
"He didn't appear like a man who was hunted for a long and hiding deep underground…it looks like a safe house…and how a fugitive like him could live in that posh house with members of his family? It's unheard of," he told the news agency.
Saber said Iraqi President Saddam Hossain was not caught with his family members. Saddam looked devastated when he was arrested while Shaekh Rahman looked fresh and without any anxiety, he added, asking, "Can anybody think that Osama bin Laden would be caught with his family members?"
Indicating Awami League's (AL's) repeated allegation that both Shaekh and Bangla Bhai are patronised by the coalition government, Saber questioned why before his surrender Shaekh reportedly wanted to talk to the state minister for home affairs and the inspector general of police (IGP).
"Doesn't it mean that Shaekh has clandestine contacts with people in the government and the administration?" he said.
Saber pointed his finger to the timing of the synchronised bombings of August 17 and the arrest of the JMB supremo. He said the August 17 blasts took place at a time when the AL-led 14-party combine spelt the reform proposals to divert public attention and Shaekh Rahman's arrest was made at a time when the movement for reforms is at its climax.
Saber further said, "It is interesting that books of Golam Azam and Maududi were found in the house from where Shaekh was arrested proving that the JMB is a wing of Jamaat and follows Jamaat's political philosophy and ideology."
