Failed state syndrome
3/7/2006

DURING my week-long stay at Dhaka around Eskaton-Moghbazar in the last week of February, this year, I was convinced about the justification of failed state title of our country considering the pathetic conditions of utility services like electricity, water, transport and traffic jam etc. Most of the time after one hour of electricity supply, darkness prevailed for an hour with supply stoppage. Low voltage resulted in acute shortage of water. Water was not suitable for consumption as it was not colourless. Neither was it odourless nor tasteless.
Recently enough publicity was drummed up about chasing food adulterers, and those who prepare food in improper environment. But should not the WASA people be punished under same code for the practise of not supplying pure water? Why are not DESA or other electricity suppliers brought to book for low voltage? Let us be honest in applying law equally with all for corrections, which is needed to halt the situation hopelessly turning pitiable.
