Farmers block road demanding fertiliser
3/9/2006

SATKHIRA, Mar 8 (UNB): More than a hundred vehicles remained stranded on both sides of Satkhira-Munshiganj highway as farmers barricaded the road demanding fertiliser Tuesday.
Over a thousand farmers of Kaliganj Upazila blocked the road near Nalta Bazar area from 10.00am to noon, which caused a huge traffic jam on the highway.
Farmers said that local administration assured them of providing one sack of fertiliser each Tuesday. But later the authorities announced that they will distribute one sack of fertiliser among four farmers when they came to receive it in the morning. Hearing the announcement the angry farmers put up the barricade on the highway.
Later, farmers put off their siege on the assurance of providing necessary fertiliser by Thursday.
Farmers threatened to go for blockade again if fertiliser is not supplied as per the assurance of the authority.
