Int'l Textile Fed's plea for steps to guarantee safety of Ramesh's life
4/21/2006

The International Textile Garment and Leather Workers Federation (ITGLWF) has urged Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to take immediate measures to guarantee the safety of prominent trade union leader and Jatiya Sramik League (JSL) General Secretary Roy Ramesh Chandra, who was attacked on April 14.
ITGLWF General Secretary Neil Kearney, in a press release received in the city Wednesday, said the global union federation has also demanded of the authorities to conduct an urgent investigation to identify those who are responsible for the attack.
On the evening of that day, Ramesh -- also general secretary of the Bangladesh National Council (BNC) for Textile, Garment and Leather Workers, and executive committee member of Textile Workers for Asian Regional Organisation (TWARO) -- was returning home when he was attacked by an armed gang. Severely injured Roy Ramesh managed to escape to safety.
The attack came just days after a fundamentalist group renewed its threats against the trade unionist. Two years ago, his name appeared on a 'hit list' of people the terrorist group said would be killed. At the time he also received threats over the phone.
Meanwhile, Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina condemned the attack on JSL General Secretary Roy Ramesh Chandra in a bid to kill him.
