DAE targets bumper output in N region

          SIRAJGANJ, Nov 27: Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) under Rajshahi division and various farm owners have taken up extensive programmes for the cultivation of winter vegetables, sources said.
Under the scheme, a total of 11,39,747 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation of various winter crops and about 3,09,372 hectares of land under the cultivation of spices in 16 northern districts in the current season.
According to the DAE, the production target has been fixed at 42,12,940 tonnes of spices in the three northern districts -- Sirajganj, Pabna and Bogra. Of the total, 3,70,241 hectares are being brought under Boro cultivation, 9,920 hectares under wheat cultivation, 4,114 hectares under maize cultivation, 10,120 hectares under potato cultivation, 27,020 hectares under sweet potato cultivation, 37,737 hectares under peanut cultivation, 9,977 hectares under mashkalai (lentil) cultivation, 4,204 hectares under motor (lentil) cultivation, 1,39,802 hectares under kheshari (lentil) cultivation and over 44,071 hectares under masur (lentil) cultivation.
A total of 2,010,277 tonnes of Boro paddy, 179,279 tonnes of wheat, 17,407 tonnes of maize, 187,210 tonnes of potato, 270,310 tonnes of sweet potato, 71,449 tonnes of masur, 62,205 tonnes of groundnut, 6,749 tonnes of chhola (lentil), 8,027 tonnes of maskalai and 4,902 tonnes of motor are expected to be produced in the districts.
Besides, the production target of spices including cumin, cassia leaf, black pepper, onion, garlic, peanut, sesame coriander, ginger, pepper and mustard has been fixed at 698,517 tonnes, source added.
The district-wise break-up of land and target of production is 60,010 hectares with production target of 18,550 tonnes in Pabna, 24,705 hectares with production target of 71,610 tonnes in Rajshahi, 12,120 hectares with production target of 40,905 tonnes in Chapainawabganj, 29,495 hectares with production target of 79,330 tonnes in Naogaon and 54,700 hectares with production target of 66,970 tonnes in Natore district.
On the other hand, 54,700 hectares of the land with a production target of 66,970 tonnes in Sirajganj, 8,150 hectares of land with a production target of 18,105 tonnes in Bogra.
