RAJSHAHI, May 31: Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has announced Tk 2,215.68 million budget proposal for the fiscal year 2006-07. RCC Mayor Mijanur Rahman Minu announced it at a press conference held in the conference room of the Rajshahi City Bhaban this noon. There was no imposition of new taxes in the proposed budget. The proposed budget for the year 2005-2006 was Tk 2,189.77 million, the revised budget of which was Tk 928.7706 million. The RCC mayor in his speech highlighted the development activities which were undertaken and executed or are to be executed during his five-year period of mayorship. He claimed that during his tenure RCC had achieved tremendous success in the fields of communication, education, health, water supply, environment and tree plantation. He also claimed that a major part of his election pledges had been fulfilled. He said that the project for supply of natural gas through pipelines had been passed by the ECNEC and the process was underway to implement the project. He expressed the hope that a new chapter of city development will be ushered in with the supply of gas in Rajshahi. The sector-wise income and expenditure in the first part of the budget has been mentioned at about Tk 1.017 billion from realisation of taxes, rates, various fees and donations and for the expenditure in giving payments, institutional expenditure, repair of roads etc. In the second part, Tk 388.14 million has been earmarked from development assistant grants and others while in the third part Tk 810.48 million has been estimated as project grant of ADP, support services of urban basic projects, digital city projects etc. No new taxes have been imposed on the city-dwellers in the budget. In his budget speech, Minu claimed that he was able to offer a peaceful, nice city for the residents of Rajshahi in all respects which has been recognised by a survey of World Happiness Forum conducted by London School of Economics.
