Leaders ask AL to suspend hartal, stand beside flood victims
7/23/2004

Leaders of different political parties and socio-cultural organisations urged Thursday Awami League (AL) to withdraw its planned hartal for July 24, and stand beside the flood victims across the country, reports BSS.
They also said the prime task of the time for anybody is to join the relief activities for the flood victims instead of calling any programme that might add to their sufferings.
Talking to the news agency, Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju MP said the hartal should be called off in view of the natural disaster.
"AL should withdraw their hartal programme on July 24 due to severity of floods. They have to do politics in the country, and that's why we think this hartal will not be beneficial for them," he said.
Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) General Secretary Muzahidul Islam Selim said the people of the country now wanted to get relief from hartal culture and also to see the improvement of the governance.
Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SKOP) Coordinator Wazedul Islam Khan said the main agenda of any political party should now be to stand by beside the flood victims and provide relief materials for them.
Trade Union Centre President Nurul Islam said despite political programmes, it was the time to get united to fight disasters across the country.
The government has to play the pioneering role in this connection, he said.
Jatiya Janata Party and Shamridhya Bangladesh Andolon in separate statements also called upon AL to withdraw hartal on July 24.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General and LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Jatiya Oikya Mancha President Kamal Hossain, UPR Coordinator ASM Abdur Rab and some other leaders have also asked AL to suspend the hartal programme considering the sufferings of the people in flood-hit areas.
They also urged the opposition party to concentrate more on relief activities instead of hartals.
Bhuiyan said Tuesday that AL should shun the path of hartal at least for the time being. He also urged the party to stand beside the flood affected people.
Kamal Hossain at a press conference in the National Press Club described Wednesday the mentality of doing politics cashing in on floods as inhuman and contrary to humanity.
He called upon all to get united irrespective of party affiliations to fight floods.
JSD leader ASM Abdur Rab called upon AL to pursue the politics of welfare instead of calling hartal during disasters.
He also said the politics of welfare suggests that one should stand beside the sufferers.
Jatiya Ganatantrik Front at a meeting urged Thursday all political parties to join hands to fight floods.
