BIRMINGHAM, July 29 (AFP) : Marcus Trescothick's unbeaten 61 left England strongly-placed on 105 for one at lunch on the first day of the second Test against West Indies at Edgbaston here Thursday. Robert Key, whose 221 in England's 210-run series-opening win at Lord's completed Monday was his maiden Test hundred, was 14 not out. England, after captain Michael Vaughan won the toss and elected to bat, made a brisk start Andrew Strauss, who scored a century at Lord's, on-drove Pedro Collins for four in the first over and later cover-drove the left-arm quick for another boundary that raced across the fast outfield. West Indies other new-ball bowler was Corey Collymore, who only flew into England earlier this week after playing in the new United States pro-league. He came in for the injured Tino Best (back) after only being brought into the squad when Ravi Rampaul had his tour cut short by shin problems. But he too conceded early boundaries to both left-handed batsmen. Trescothick then struck two fours in successive balls off Collins to bring up England's fifty in 64 balls Collymore was replaced after a five-over spell costing 22 runs by Jermaine Lawson, in for Fidel Edwards who went wicketless at Lord's. Fast bowler Lawson, who was forced to undergo remedial work on his action after last year's series at home to Australia before being sidelined with back problems, also conceded two boundaries in as many balls to Trescothick. Somerset opener Trescothick's single off Lawson took him to a 61-ball fifty with 10 fours. But Strauss, on 24, donated his wicket when he chased a wide delivery from Lawson and edged through to wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs, England 77 for one in the 18th over. scoreboard England 1st Innings M.
