Bourses' price indices end mixed, turnover down in thin trading

          The price indices on the country's two stock exchanges ended mixed, but turnover dropped in thin trading last week while the retail investors continued to maintain a cautious mood.
The banking and pharmaceuticals and chemical sectors were active making high contributions to trading at both the bourses.
The General Price Index on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), compiled on the basis of average prices, slipped by 0.37 per cent or 6.24 points to close at 1670.96 points from the previous week's 1677.19. The week's total turnover, in terms of value , on the DSE stood at Tk 667.68 million following transactions of 10.32 million shares and debentures against the previous week's Tk 1240.54 million after transaction of Tk 19.76 million shares that registered 46.18 per cent fall over that of the previous week.
The total market capitalisation at DSE also decreased by 0.33 per cent to close at Tk 212.01 billion.
As on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the All Share Price Index, however, nominally gained 1.83 points or 0.05 per cent to close at 3378.90 points from 3377.07 points of the previous week. The turnover dropped by 40.89 per cent following transactions of 3.91 million shares worth Tk 139.88 million against the previous week's total transaction of 7.48 million shares valued at Tk 236.65 million.
The CSE total market capitalisation also decreased by 0.001 per cent to close at Tk 210.82 billion.
The market was miserly active, as 200 out of 261 listed securities were traded on the DSE during the week, including 53 gainers, 138 losers and nine remaining unchanged. On the CSE, 94 out of the 204 listed issues were active. Of them, 32 gained, 58 declined and four remained unchanged on the CSE.
The banking sector shares contributed more than 54 per cent to the trade turnover on the DSE in the week, while it accounted for nearly 37 per cent of the week's trade turnover on the CSE.
In trading, Quasem Silk performed as the top gainer on the DSE, registering 134.09 per cent gain. Eastern Lubricant was the top losing issue on the DSE with its price falling by 16.67 per cent over the week.
National Polymar appeared as the top gaining issue on the CSE, posting 23.53 per cent rise in price. On the other hand, Samata Leather was the top loser of the week on the CSE, as its price slipped by 20.00 per cent. Beximco Pharma was the trade turnover leader on both the bourses.
