DCC Mayor for a bigger Dhaka city
8/24/2006

Dhaka City Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka Wednesday proposed for formulating a master plan linking the capital with Keraniganj, Kanchpur area, Savar and Gazipur Chowrasta to create a space for resolving various problems of the overcrowded metropolis, reports UNB.
"Over 10 million people now live in Dhaka City, which is higher than the total population of many countries. It has just become impossible for the Dhaka City Corporation to cope with the situation with its present manpower and logistic support," a worried mayor said.
Khoka was replying to a volley of questions from journalists at a Meet-the-Reporters programme at the conference room of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) this noon.
He said the periphery of the capital could be widened linking Keraniganj, Kanchpur area, Savar and Gazipur Chowrasta so that its chronic problems like traffic congestion and lack of roads could be resolved.
The Mayor identified lack of manpower and proper planning behind the mess in capital Dhaka. "There should be at least three cleaners for every 1000 people in a modern city.
