Rajshahi, Thakurgaon silk factories reopen soon
8/6/2004

RAJSHAHI, Aug 5: At last the silk factories in Rajshahi and Thakurgaon are going to open after remaining closed for more than a year. In a meeting presided over by Jute and Textile Minister Shahjahan Siraj, the decision was taken to reopen the factories again. Established in 1961, the Rajshahi Silk Factory had been bearing the burden of loss for a long time. In November 30, 2002 it was officially closed leaving 278 workers jobless. In the meeting with the Textile and Jute Minister, the committee, which was formed to reopen the factories, decided to seek allocation of Tk 30 million (3 crore) as financial assistance from the Finance Ministry to restart these factories and run those profitably later. It was also decided that the workers would be paid as per production and profit. — Our Correspondent
