BARISAL, Aug 5: A young man was sentenced to death and another to life-term imprisonment for killing a neighbour at Mehendiganj about five years ago. Judge SM Quddus handed down the death penalty to Rahim Akon (38) and life term to Shahjahan Raree (42) in a crowded court. Seven others were acquitted. The prosecution said they attacked the home of Mafez Raree at Darirchar Khazuria village at about 3.0 pm on October 11, 1999, following a dispute over a shrimp enclosure. Mafez, Yunus, Wazed and Saiful Raree were seriously injured in the attack. Yunus succumbed to his injury at the Mehendiganj hospital the same day. — UNB
