9/12/2005

Six bills substantially raising the pays and perks of the president, the prime minister, speakers, ministers, Supreme Court judges and MPs were laid in parliament Sunday, reports UNB.
LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Moudud Ahmed separately moved the bills which were all sent to the standing committee on Law Ministry for further scrutiny.
Mannan Bhuiyan introduced the 'The President's (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2005' to increase the salary of the president from Tk 23,000 to Tk 33,400.
He also introduced 'The Prime Minister's (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2005' proposing to increase the salary of the prime minister from Tk 22000 to Tk 32000.
The LGRD Minister introduced another bill, 'The Ministers, Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2005' to raise the salary of the ministers, ministers of state and deputy ministers from Tk 20,000, Tk 18,000 and Tk 17,000 to Tk 29,000, Tk 26,100 and Tk 24,650 respectively.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Moudud Ahmed introduced a bill to increase the pay and perks of the chief justice and other judges in the appellate division and High Court division of the Supreme Court.
In the objective of the bill it is stated that the salaries and remuneration of the chief justice and other judges in the two divisions of the Supreme Court were fixed in 1998. "But the amounts have not been raised since then although the overall expenditures increased in the meantime. For that reasons the salary and remuneration need to be increased."
To increase the remuneration and allowances for the chief justice and the other judges 'The Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2005' was introduced in the House.
In the bill the law minister proposed to increase the monthly salary of the chief justice and appellate division and High Court division judges to Tk 30,500, Tk 29,000 and Tk 27,000 from Tk 21000, Tk 20000 and Tk 18500 respectively.
Besides, as per provisions of the bill, the chief justice and the other judges will get Tk 12, 000, up from Tk 10,000, if they do not use official car.
The bill also proposed to raise the domestic help allowance for the chief justice and appellate division and High Court division judges to Tk 1250, Tk 1125 and Tk 1000 instead of Tk 750, Tk 710 and Tk 685 respectively.
The bill proposed to introduce entertainment allowance for all judges of the Supreme Court. On this account Tk 975 and Tk 650 would be provided for appellate division and High Court judges. The allowance for the chief justice was raised to Tk 5200 from Tk 3000.
Moudud introduced another bill 'The Speaker and Deputy Speaker (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2005' in parliament to increase allowances of the speaker and the deputy speaker. The speaker will be provided Tk 31,200, up from Tk 21,500, while deputy speaker will get Tk 29,000 instead of Tk 20,000.
The Law Minister introduced another bill 'The Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill 2005' proposing to increase the salary and allowances to the Members of Parliament from Tk 10,000 to Tk 15,000.
