Environmental activists urge all to halt loss of biodiversity

Environmental activists Thursday called upon all to take collective efforts to halt irreparable loss of biodiversity caused by multifarious aggression on land and water bodies across the country, reports BSS.
"All should work together to check incurable loss of biodiversity threatened by assault of influential quarters on land and water bodies across the country," FEJB chairman, Quamrul Islam Chowdhury told a discussion organised in observance of World Biodiversity Day at FEJB conference room here.
The discussion was organised in cooperation with Sustainable Environment Management Programme under the Ministry of Environment and Forest and United Nations Development Programme.
"Different influential quarters have been causing incurable damage to species by encroaching upon water bodies, by cutting hills and constructing unplanned dams obstructing flow of rivers and canals," he said.
Journalists, including FEJB vice chairman Anwar Hossain Manju and general secretary Mofizur Rahman, Nurul Huda of national news agency BSS, Hasan Hafiz of the Daily Janakantha, Giasuddin Ahmed of the Daily Ittefaq, Shafique Chowdhury of the Daily Sangram, Abdul Hye Siddique of television channel Banglavision, Abdullah Al Faruque of the Daily Samakal, Shahidul Islam Chowdhury of New Age, Salahuddin Bablu of the Daily Inqilab and Abu Darda Zubair of television channel ATN participated in the discussion.
Later, FEJB accorded a reception to Chinese journalist Wang Ning, who successfully accomplished an eight-month-long fellowship in Bangladesh under South-South Exchange Programme of Asia-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists (APFEJ) sponsored by Fredskorpset, Norway.
