EC yet to receive HC verdict on voter roll

The Election Commission (EC) continues preparing the controversial fresh electoral roll, as it is yet to have the verdict delivered by the High Court (HC).
Election Commission Secretary SM Zakaria said: "We have not yet received any copy of the HC verdict."
"We are continuing our task of preparing the fresh voter list and no directive has been given to the EC to stop its on-going works", he said.
Two election commissioners, Mohammad Ali and Munsef Ali, however, will request Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) MA Aziz to sit for a discussion to prepare a neutral electoral roll.
Mohammad Ali said the verdict had been given in the light of the Constitution. As per the verdict, the voter list cannot be made putting aside the list in 2000 and now it has to be made by revising the existing one, he said.
Following the verdict by the HC, the EC is now obligated to prepare a proper voter list in the light of the verdict but sometimes the commission itself can make some inclusions and exclusions through discussions in the interest of the peaceful election, he added.
The Law Department chief told the BDNEWS that the way the preparation of fresh voter list was going on the HC gave directives to continue with the works.
It is not yet clear whether the verdict asked the EC to revise the existing voter roll or to make a fresh one and still there is confusion regarding the issue, he added.
He further said, "We are also waiting to receive the copy of the verdict to see what it has said."
He, however, said the voter list is an on-going process. The electoral roll of 2000 will continue until and unless the fresh one is made, he added.
The task of preparing the controversial electoral roll began Sunday in a disorderly manner.
About 3,00000 persons were appointed for the job and the HC verdict came after works of four days at a stretch.
Meanwhile, CEC MA Aziz is yet to open his mouth to the press even two days after the HC verdict.
