Police sergeant abduction event ‘stagemanaged’
FE Report
2/13/2005

The mystery shrouded in the alleged sergeant abduction was unearthed by the investigating police officials. They called it a stagemanaged game.
Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Farook Ahmed said the incident of abduction was fake and the two sergeants went to the spot over a woman-related affair.
In the investigation report, Farook Ahmed, chief of the one-member probe committee, said Asaduzzaman and Monirul Islam were not abducted from city's Shyamoli area though they claimed so.
During the thorough investigation he said they acknowledged the incident and said Asaduzzaman took money from different people in the name of giving jobs and one of such victims might have staged the drama to realise the money or give a lesson.
"When we investigated the incident, he said the offer of ransom to the hostage for releasing them was found true but the story of arranging money in such a short time is not true," Farook said to the journalists at the office of the Detective Branch (DB) Saturday.
Earlier, Asaduzzaman and Monirul bought their freedom for Tk 200,000 Thursday noon after spending 15 hours in captivity.
They resorted to false stories to get released from captivity, he said adding that as a result, the image of the country's police department was affected slightly.
When asked, Farook gave a long description of the incident and said some people who gave money to Asaduzzaman for jobs held them hostage for realising money through a scandal over a woman.
When Monirul Islam, one of the sergeants, was asked, he said the incident of abduction was false and the fact was that they went there willingly. But, they did not know whether it was a staging drama, he said.
"The alleged police officers might be axed from their jobs or money may be deducted from the salaries or they might be demoted from their present rank," Farook said adding that this was the first investigation report though it needs further investigation into the incident.
"I would recommend taking necessary actions against the alleged police officers as per the rules of police regulations and other related ones as they have violated the decency of their service rules," Farook said while he was replying to the queries of the newsmen.
Farook said, first of all, the team investigated whether they were abducted or not; secondly, whether they went to the spot willingly and presently the team was searching for the woman who took them to the spot from the bus stand.
On the confessional statement of the victims, Farook said a woman took Asad from the bus stand to the city's 85 North Damalkot under the Cantonment Police Station Thursday last.
"The whole story would be more clear to us if we could find out the woman," Farook concluded.
