City beautification

2/25/2005

As part of the Dhaka Urban Transport Project the metropolis has been decorated with flower and other plants. Keeping the Saarc Summit ahead the city corporation expedited the project. A laudable job has been performed by the authorities concerned with the help of private sector.
It was very much desired to clean up the dirt and beautify the city. The involvement of the private sector is expected to give a better result as far as the maintenance is concerned. I have seen that in the early morning the private companies employ people to water the plants and at night some companies post guards at their sites.
Recently on my way to Uttara from Gulshan I have seen in some places that a number of flower plants dying. The plants in and around Dhaka Cantonment are found to be the liveliest as these plants are getting maximum care. In some parts of the city like in Tejgaon, Karwanbazar and some parts of Kakrail areas, the plants perhaps are not getting adequate care.
The private companies in charge should take care of their respective areas. But we would expect that the city corporation, police department and others concerned would also come forward to preserve this beauty. Traffic police personnel have special responsibility to take care so that the plants are not taken away or damaged by street urchins.
