EC to appeal against HC verdict in a day or two

The Election Commission (EC) will appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the verdict of the High Court on preparation of the voter's list for the forthcoming general elections. The appeal is likely to be filed either today or tomorrow, a reliable source of the EC told newsmen Sunday. AKM Selimullah, deputy secretary (law) of the EC secretariat, said necessary papers have already been prepared after reviewing the High Court verdict. Khandakar Mahbubuddin Ahmed will soon file the appeal before the Appellate Division. He said the appeal would be filed on the basis of a decision taken Thursday at a meeting at the EC. Chief Election Commissioner Justice M A Aziz and election commissioners Justice Mahfuzur Rahman and S M Zakaria opined in favour of an appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the HC verdict. — BSS
