Alliance govt has to be pulled down for nat'l existence: Hasina

1/23/2006

Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina Sunday said the alliance government has to be pulled down for the sake of the country's independence, sovereignty, democracy and national existence, reports UNB.
"We'll have to make Bangladesh a non-communal, democratic and safe country by throwing out the BNP-Jammat alliance government as it patronises the bombers, religious and communal extremists and fundamentalists," she said in a statement. In the statement she appreciated the countrymen for observing the 14 party-sponsored nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal.
"We want to change the government through a free and fair election by implementing the opposition's reform agenda for overhauling the caretaker government system and the Election Commission," she said.
Hasina said the government has appointed partisan people to the Election Commission and in every tier of the administration in its bid to cling to power through vote rigging. This evil-move has to be resisted through a vigorous mass movement, she added.
The AL president said the misrule of the alliance government and its failure on all fronts to run the country has put democracy, human rights and the rule of law at stake.
She also condemned police attack on a peaceful procession of AL activists during hartal hours in Dhaka that left a number of party leaders and activists, including Faruk Khan MP, Dr Iqbal, Brig (retd) Baker and Col (retd) Shahjahan, injured.
Hasina demanded immediate and unconditional release of the party activists arrested during the hartal hours and withdrawal of the false cases filed against them.
