24-hr transport strike in Mymensingh begins

2/8/2006

MYMENSINGH, Feb 7 (BDNEWS): Transport owners and workers began a 24-hour wildcat strike in greater Mymensingh district from 6am Tuesday mainly demanding cancellation of the bus services of the state-owned BRTC, which is comparatively cheaper.
Only a few buses reached here from capital Dhaka Tuesday morning while transport workers caught and kept a BRTC bus confined at the Maskanda bus terminal.
No bus left from the terminals of the district town.
Transport scarcity caused untold sufferings to the passengers who did not know about the strike call.
The owners and workers are also demanding implementation of the agreements signed with Communications Minister Nazmul Huda on May 19, 2005 and Whip Jahed Ali Chowdhury on May 28, 2005 as well as stopping commercial movement of vehicles having private registration.
