FE Report
2/8/2006

The government will consider formation of a national taskforce on environment to address all the environmental concerns and mainstream it in all development efforts. Local Government Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said this while inaugurating a three-day international symposium on environmental sustainability at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Tuesday as the chief guest.
He added: "We will also seriously consider the role of the local government in improving environmental condition."
The symposium was chaired by Vice-chancellor of BUET Alee Murtuza.
The keynote speaker of the symposium, professor of civil engineering Mujibur Rahman said major causes of environmental pollution include unscientific land use, pollution of surface waters, unplanned urbanisation, human settlements, lack of safe and adequate water supply and sanitation facilities, natural disasters and climate change and variability.
