100 illegal buildings demolished in Ctg

2/13/2006

CHITTAGONG, Feb 12 (BSS): The Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) on the first day of its three-day eviction drive demolished nearly 100 different types of unauthorised building structures at Andarkilla, Nowab Sirajuddowla Road and Karpashgola in the city today.
The authority started the drive to expand an already narrowed important road from Andarkilla to Karpashgola Crossing to 60-feet at a cost of Tk 260 million.
The eviction drive began this morning by a CDA Magistrate, Tahera Ferdous, under the direct supervision of CDA Chairman Shah Mohammad Aktheruddin. The CDA workers with the active help of Chittagong Metropolitan Police are carrying out the drive.
The CDA officials said the authorities had decided to recover the illegally occupied lands, roads and footpaths and expand the existing road networks of the port city under a CDA Master Plan.
They said the CDA would give compensation to the real owners for their lands to be acquired to expand and develop the road networks but not for the illegally built building structures.
Meanwhile, owners of the buildings and commercial establishments on both sides of the Nowab Sirajuddowla Road have protested the CDA eviction drive.
The CDA authorities also sought cooperation of these owners but they did not pay any heed to the notice, he said.
