Export from DEPZ enterprises crosses target by 8.0pc

The enterprises of Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) exported goods worth about US$720.25 million in 2005-06 fiscal year, which was 8.0 per cent more than the target.
Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) Md Zakir Hossain said this to Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury when he visited the Dhaka EPZ Monday, said a press release.
He was accompanied by Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Mohammad Abdul Karim.
The minister lauded the activities of BEPZA and operational procedure of the EPZs.
Zakir Hossain briefed the visitors about the entire gamut of EPZs including export, investment and employment.
He also told the minister that BEPZA had approved 17 new industries in the current fiscal year. He said about 160 thousand workers have so far been employed in the EPZs of the country.
General Manager of Dhaka EPZ Kamal Akhter also briefed the delegation about the activities and development of the EPZ.
The commerce minister expressed his satisfaction about the activities and modus operandi of BEPZA. Later the minister visited four factories in Dhaka EPZ, named, Youngone High Tech Sportswear Ltd, a 100 per cent Korean garments manufacturing plant, FCI Industries Ltd, a British plant producing specialised garments items, YKK (BD) Ltd. and a Japanese-owned company engaged in manufacturing zipper.
Altaf Hossain took much interest and saw the manufacturing process of the industries and lauded the activities of the companies. He praised the working capability of the EPZ workers.
The minister was satisfied to see the peaceful production oriented congenial atmosphere prevailing in the zone. He also said the workers of EPZs are the asset of the country, who play a supportive role in strengthening the economic base of the country.
He also said due to the investment friendly policy of the present government investment is increasing in the country and the government has established two new EPZ for new investors.
The minister pledged government cooperation to attract more investment in EPZs.
