Reforms of caretaker govt, EC
Opposition threatens non-coop movement

3/11/2006

The 14-party opposition combine is at the point of no return having no alternative but to go ahead with final programme of toppling the government to press home their demand of reforms in the electoral and caretaker government systems, reports BDNEWS.
The policy-makers of the opposition combine said there is no window open at present for any compromise with the government.
Several policy-making leaders of the 14-party alliance said that they would force the government to bow down to their demand through launching various programmes like siege, sit-in-demonstration, hartal and grand rally, and at the final stage they (opposition MPs) would resign from the parliament and launch the non-cooperation movement.
Awami League (AL) General Secretary and 14-party coordinator Abdul Jalil, MP, said, "We have no option left to look back. Our programmes will continue to establish people's rights," he added.
"We will go ahead with our programmes along with the people of the country until and unless our demands are met and the government steps down", Jalil said emphatically.
Regarding the next course of action programmes of the opposition combine AL presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury said that they would do everything in their capacity along with the people of the country to realise the demands.
"We will go for election only after our demands are met so that people of the country can exercise their franchise without fear," she said, adding," people are with us and they do not want to see the ruling alliance any longer in the power."
Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon said there is no window open for any dialogue with the government. "We have to realise our demands through movements," he said.
JSD president Hasanul Haq Inu said the government is still hatching conspiracy to hold a farcical election according to their blue print and, therefore, there is no alternative to movement to realise the demands of people.
Following the besiege programme to the Election Commission (EC) office on March 12, the opposition combine will announce the non-stop movement programmes, they said.
The programmes, however, will be announced taking into consideration the on-going SSC examination, they added.
AL presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim said, "We will finalise our programmes after besieging the EC on March 12 and we have also programmes on March 26 and 17."
The 14-party alliance is observing ceaseless programmes demanding reforms in the caretaker government and electoral systems, removal of two election commissioners, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), preparation of voter roll as per the court directives, trial of militant leaders in sedition charges, expelling patrons of militants from the ruling alliance and their trials, arresting the price hike of essentials and resolving the crises of fertiliser, diesel and power.
The Awami Juba League (JL) announced a half-day countrywide hartal on March 13.
The JL will also hold a grand rally on March 20 in the capital. Top leaders of the 14-party, including leader of the opposition in parliament Sheikh Hasina, will be present at the rally.
