US rejects N Korean proposal to establish joint committee

3/12/2006

WASHINGTON, MAR 11 (AP): The United States rejected a North Korean proposal to open direct talks on financial issues, which the communist government says is responsible for its decision to boycott nuclear disarmament negotiations.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice showed impatience with North Korea Friday when asked during a flight to Chile about alleged counterfeiting and other illicit activities by the North Koreans.
"They should just stop them. I mean, don't counterfeit other people's money," Rice said.
As for North Korea's proposal for the establishment of one-to-one talks with the United States, she said, "I don't think we need long discussions of how to get to a position where those defensive measures (sanctions) are no longer needed.
