AL demands int'l inquiry into bomb attacks, militant activities

3/12/2006

Main opposition Awami League (AL) Saturday again demanded international inquiry under the UN supervision into all killings, grenade and bomb attacks and militant activities to let the people know the facts.
"We are raising the demand as we think the countrymen are kept in dark by the TFI interrogators…these interrogators once protected the militant supremos," AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil said at a press conference at the party's Dhanmondi office in the city, reports UNB.
He said perpetrators and their patrons could only be brought to justice through an international inquiry.
Pointing out the contradiction in remarks made by the Prime Minister and the IGP, Jalil said the PM is saying militants have foreign links while IGP rejected such a possibility. "Who is telling lies: the Prime Minister or the IGP?"
He called for expulsion from the cabinet of the ministers, who "patronised and harboured the JMB militants."
He also demanded interrogation of Jamaat chief and Industries Minister Matiur Rahman Nizami, Telecommunications Minister Barrister Aminul Haq, Rajshahi Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu, State Minister Alamgir Kabir, Deputy Minister Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu, Nadim Mostafa MP, PM's son Tarique Rahman and State Minister Lutfozzaman Babar for their alleged patronage to the militants.
"BNP-Jamaat coalition government has created these terrorists to annihilate Awami League," Jalil said, adding: "Khaleda-Nizami and Tarique-Babar are patrons of the terrorists."
He said: "The government had arrested the JMB kingpins in the face of tremendous pressure from the international community and public demand, but after their arrest the government is trying to hide the real godfathers."
