Japan's industrial output hits new record high

3/15/2006

TOKYO, Mar 14 (AFP): Japanese plants and factories boosted output by 0.4 per cent in January, more than previously thought, taking industrial output up to new record high levels, the government said Tuesday.
It was a sixth straight month of expansion and reinforced the view that the world's number two economy remains on a steady recovery path after a slump stretching back over a decade.
Industrial output was up 2.2 per cent in January from a year earlier, figures from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry showed.
In an initial estimate released last month the ministry had reported a month-on-month rise of 0.3 per cent and a year-on-year expansion of 2.1 per cent.
January's performance marks a slowdown from December's 1.3 per cent month-on-month growth and year-on-year expansion of 3.7 per cent.
