Britain launch campaign on forced marriage

3/29/2006

The British joint Home Office and Commonwealth Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) began a national publicity campaign on forced marriage on 16 March this year, reports UNB.
The joint FMU was launched by the British Home Office and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on January 26 last year, said a British High Commission release.
The unit leads on policy, outreach work and projects to raise awareness and provides support to survivors of forced marriage, as well as providing practical support and information to people at risk of being forced into marriage.
The publicity campaign on forced marriage supported by actors Meera Syal and Ameet Chana will involve a series of radio and press adverts, TV fillers and poster campaigns.
The campaign, aiming to increase awareness of the issues surrounding forced marriage, will highlight the difference between forced and arranged marriage, and make clear that forced marriage is an abuse of human rights and a form of domestic violence.
