Faulty edn system to blame for extremism in Bangladesh

A senior USAID official praised Tuesday Bangladesh for a series of achievements in economic and social fronts, but was critical about corruption and rise of extremism blaming the flawed education system for the situation.
"No longer we see starvation (in Bangladesh), no longer we see destitute arising from floods. What we see is corruption. What we see is extremism," USAID Bangladesh Mission Director Gene V George told the BDNEWS in an exclusive interview.
He said the government has to set a basic education standard that would be followed by all educational institutions, be it a madrasha or an English-medium school.
"There is nothing wrong with the religious education system ... I am from a catholic school. But the government needs to have a more prominent role in regulating madrasha and monitoring what they are doing.
"Your education system is flawed. Because it's not producing quality graduates."
The young people aged between 14 and 18 are easily attracted to extremism because of the lack of quality education in Bangladesh, he observed.
