RU achieves significant success in infrastructure dev, academic fields

RAJSHAHI, Oct 7 (BSS): Rajshahi University, the second largest public institution for higher education in Bangladesh, achieved a significant success in infrastructure development and academic field during the past four years.
Concerned sources said during the period the RU authorities greatly reduced the problem of session jam that creates a stumbling bloc in the academic years in the country's highest seats of learning. Except a few, they said, major departments have been made free from the session jam crisis.
During the four-year tenure of the present government, the RU authorities also executed two big projects involving Tk 479.8 million (47.98 crore) for further improvement under the fifth five-year plan and Tk 113.1 million (11.31 crore) for opening the agriculture faculty.
Construction of the fourth science, fourth arts and the fine arts (partial) buildings were done along with the deans' complex under the further improvement project. Besides, the teachers students cultural centre (TSCC) was built at a cost of Tk 15 million (1.5 crore), they said.
To resolve the residential crisis, construction works of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, second block extension of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall and fifth Female Hall (partial) were done side by side with construction of residential buildings and dormitory for the teachers, officers and employees.
Moreover, the sources said, procurement of scientific apparatus, three buses, an ambulance, books and journals and opening of six new departments and one institute were completed and cost Tk 91.6 million (9.16 crore) under the project.
Meanwhile, under the agriculture faculty, the faculty building, farm house for the animal husbandry and veterinary science department and wait house for the fisheries department were built along with extension of the old building and hostel house at Narkelbaria campus.
In addition to opening of the faculty and four new departments, one bus and four microbuses and necessary books and journals were procured, the sources said.
During the past four years, around 25,000 saplings of various trees including fruit bearing, timber and herbal ones were planted on the 303.8-hectare campus under the government's environment development and afforestation programme.
In addition to conservation and development of campus environment, free movement of various species of birds is being witnessed currently following the afforestation activities.
Talking to BSS Vice-Chancellor of RU Professor Dr. Altaf Hossain said a qualitative change has been achieved in the academic and research fields of the varsity with successful implementation of the programmes.
He said the government's effective steps side by side with the relentless efforts of the varsity's administration have been playing a vital role in this regard.
"Due to the initiative of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, RU got an ambulance for its medical centre while construction of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall and a block of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall is nearing completion," he said.
