FE Report
10/10/2005

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in its first ever drive Sunday caught red-handed three officials of Chittagong Customs House (CCH) while they were taking bribes.
The officials were identified as Appraiser Kismat Ali, Sepoy Moshior Rahman and Upper Division Clerk (UDC) Samirul Hoque.
Acting on a tip off, a team of ACC officials maintained a close watch on the officials concerned from Sunday morning and at one stage caught them red handed while they were taking bribes.
However, none could confirm how much money they had taken from the parties concerned.
Later, the ACC team handed over the customs officials to the Commissioner of CCH who suspended them instantly.
A team led by one of the ACC Commissioners Monir Uddin Ahmed visited CCH on September 29 last.
During the visit, he, quoting a report of the Transparency International - Bangladesh, said the customs officials extort bribes nearly 4.6 billion a year from the exporters and importers.
