Gas leakage in Barapukuria coal mine
Govt forms body to find causes

The Energy Ministry Sunday formed an inquiry committee headed by Senior General Manager of Petrobangla Mokbul Elahi to identify the reasons behind the gas leakage at Barapukuria coal mine that forced a halt in its operation, reports UNB
The other members of the committee are Managing Director of the Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Mahbubur Rahman, British consultant of the mine Barry Edward and Chief Executive Officer of the IIFC Nazrul Islam.
As per terms of reference of the committee, it would inquire as to why such incident of gas leakage took place at the initial stage of the mine operation and whether it was a result of the fault of the operating company.
It will also recommend measures to stop any such leakage in future.
The committee was asked to submit its report within the next ten working days.
The commercial extraction of coal from the country's first mine at Barapukurua became uncertain due to leakage of gas through the pit.
Sources said carbon monoxide gas started to emit from the underground mine on September 30, forcing CMC, the Chinese operator of the mine, to suspend its operation.
But Chairman of Petrobangla SR Osmani told UNB in Dhaka that the leakage had been successfully sealed on Friday.
Advisor of the Energy Ministry Mahmudur Rahman said the government would take measures on the basis of the findings and recommendations of the inquiry committee.
"Now this has become our main concern as to when we could resume the commercial operation of the mine", he added.
