Government policies and business

10/13/2005

HIGHER economic growth and its fruits -- jobs and income for people -- is the direct outcome of a proper business environment existing in a country. The most important feature of such an environment is the confidence on the part of the members of the business community that they can rely on positive conditions that make up the external environment of their businesses. These conditions have many elements where the government has a significant role to play in areas such as its fiscal policy and also the monetary policy of the central bank. Both these policies either encourage or discourage businesses. The sufficient duration of such policies is, of course, important. The businesses can then interpret them as useful. Meanwhile, existence of proper infrastructures and the government's promotion of such infrastructure building do have also important bearings on the overall business environment.
In this context, all concerned would expect that the government in Bangladesh will contribute much more in relation to all those inputs that have relevance to efforts for creation of a conducive business environment in the country.
