23 groups get Tk 0.66m to grow fruits, vegetables

PABNA, Oct 12 (UNB): A grant of Tk 0.66 million (6.58 lakh) was distributed among the 23 groups under the project for cultivation of various crops, fruits, vegetables and spices to make them self-reliant.
The speakers said this at a day-long workshop for the beneficiaries of the Integrated Horticulture and Nutrition (IHAN) initiated development project was held at the Horticulture Centre here Tuesday.
The workshop was organised to popularise the transfer of agri-technology and extension and diversification of crop cultivation.
Additional Director of Department of Agriculture Extension of Rajshahi region ML Mahmud attended the programme as the chief guest while IHAN Project Coordinator AB Siddiqui was present as the special guest.
The meeting was informed that the five-year IHAN project started here in 2000 with the financial assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and will be completed in December this year.
Some 1,260 male and female farmers of 19 villages in Sadar, Atgharia, Ishwardi and Sathia upazilas have been divided into 90 groups for imparting them training under the project, the meeting was told.
A total of 60 people including farmers, officials of department of agricultural extension (DAE) and representatives and field workers of different non-government organisations (NGOs) and nursery owners took part in the workshop.
