Govt to complete trial of journalist killing cases within its tenure

10/16/2005

The government will complete the trial of the cases of journalist killings across the country within its tenure, while the process of trying the bombers has already been started, State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar said in the city Saturday, reports UNB.
"Charge sheets in most of those cases have already been submitted while the remaining charge sheets will be completed soon," the state minister told an Iftar party hosted by the Crime Reporters' Association of Bangladesh (CRAB).
The state minister claimed that, barring a few scattered untoward incidents, overall law and order situation marked remarkable improvements. "We will have to maintain this trend."
Citing government's anti-terror initiatives code-named 'Operation Clean Heart,' and 'Operation Spiderman' and the formation of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), he said these measures reflect the determination of the present administration to improve law and order in the country.
On the countrywide simultaneous bombings on August 17 and October 3, the state minister said many perpetrators were nabbed, charge sheets submitted and, in some cases, trial process also started. "We expect verdict in some of these cases in next few months."
Commenting on the identity of those arrested in connection with the blasts, he said that "these elements belonged to lower tier, and they had committed the crimes perhaps without knowing what hey had done."
Apart from police operation, the state minister said, the police administration is conducting motivation campaign involving police and people against the terrors and bombers.
Appreciating the reports of crime reporters whom he considered as another 'intelligence agency' to detect crimes and catch the criminals, Babar said taking all the risks the crime reporters published their reports against hardened criminals.
