10/16/2005

PABNA, Oct 15: A notorious extremist and leader of an outlawed party was killed in a shootout between Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and his accomplices near Dhopaghata Bridge in Sadar Upazila early today (Saturday). Acting on a tip-off, the RAB-5 arrested Mukter Hossain alias Bachchu (30), a regional leader of Purba Banglar Communist Party (ML, Lal Pataka) from CND Bazar in Bera Upazila Friday morning. He was taken to RAB headquarters in Rajshahi for quizzing. Following his confessional statement, the RAB took him to Pabna district to recover arms and arrest his cohorts at 11pm. RAB sources claimed when they along with Bachchu reached near Dhopaghata Bridge at 2am, his accomplices opened fire, forcing the elite force to return fire. Bachhu was caught in the encounter and received bullet wounds while trying to flee. —UNB
