BAGERHAT, Oct 15 (UNB): Ruling BNP and its labour wing Sramik Dal staged demonstrations late Saturday night and this morning protesting the arrest of two people, including a Sramik Dal leader, from fish market area in the town. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday arrested organising secretary of district Jatiyatabadi Matsajibi Dal Sheikh Abdul Jalil alias 'Major Jalil' (48), and his associate, Mukul Sheikh alias Mukul Kasai, president of the district meat traders association. RAB and police sources said Jalil was wanted in a number of cases, including two killings as well as extortion and robbery in coastal areas of Bagerhat, Patuakhali and Pirojpur. Mukul has also complicity with those alleged criminal activities of Jalil. Receiving the news of Jalil's arrest, a group of workers loyal to the BNP brought out protest processions in the town late at night on Friday. They also took out procession today and laid siege to the residence of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Moinuddin demanding the release Jalil and Mukul. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the DC describing Jalil as an honest man dedicated to the welfare of workers. RAB sources said they arrested Jalil and Mukul on charge of their involvement with various criminal activities. The elite force is also looking into the mystery why Jalil was using the rank of a Major before his name although he is not a member of the army.
