World Food Day today
Global pledge to ensure access to food by all for healthy living

The World Food Day will be observed in the country as elsewhere around the globe today (Sunday) with a renewed pledge to ensure access of all to food for their better and healthy living, reports BSS.
Each year on October 16, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, observe the World Food Day marking its founding anniversary. FAO was established on October 16, 1945 in Quebec City in Canada.
This year's theme of the day is "Agriculture and Inter- Cultural Dialogue".
The ministry of agriculture has chalked out an elaborate programme to observe the Day in a befitting manner.
As part of the programme, a seminar will be held at the auditorium of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) at Farmgate at 9.30am today (Sunday).
President Iajuddin Ahmed and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia have issued separate messages on the eve of the day.
In his message, Iajuddin described this year's theme of the day as significant terming food as part of culture.
He said the main component of food comes from agriculture though food habit, life style and culture of people across the world are different.
The president said exchange of agriculture information and culture, technology transfer, communication and dialogue among different countries can play an important role in increasing agricultural productions.
He said Bangladesh had been able to achieve self-sufficiency in food production due to concerted efforts of the country's agricultural scientists, extension and field workers and farmers dedicated to agriculture.
In a similar message, Khaleda Zia said the theme of this year's World Food Day has been timely and meaningful in the present perspective of modernisation and expansion of agriculture in agro-based Bangladesh.
She said the developed and developing countries are aware of producing adequate nutritious foods and ensuring food security for the people. She said it is possible to bring desired progress in agriculture with alleviating poverty by distributing sustainable technology among the huge population depending on agriculture.
The prime minister expressed the hope that "Agriculture and Inter- Cultural Dialogue" will contribute a lot to identifying and innovating technology and distributing those to the farmers and in extension programmes.
