Dhaka not aware of world tea expo in US

11/1/2005

Bangladesh is not aware of the world tea expo to be held at Las Vegas in the USA from March 27 to 29 next year, tea board officials said.
"We are not yet aware of the world tea expo," said Brigadier General Mosharraf Hossain, chairman of Bangladesh Tea Board, reports BDNEWS.
According to official source, Bangladesh exports some 12 to 14 million kilogrammes of tea every year. Of the export, over 90 per cent is exported to Pakistan only.
Participation in the US expo would help tea producers to interact directly with the buyers, retailers and the opinion builders associated with the global tea business, local exporters said.
Leading tea buyers from the US, Germany, Japan and Middle East countries would go there to check out quality tea from different producing nations.
"We want to go there for making inroads into the US and other markets," said Mohammad Nasiruddin of M M Ispahani Ltd, a major tea exporter in the country.
"I am not yet known about the exposition in US," chairman of Bangladesh Tea Board said. But, this sort of exposition could boost a nation's tea market, he noted.
"We want to participate in the exposition in order to be more visible in the global tea export market," said an official of Duncan Brothers (BD) Ltd.
He said quality upgradation is not given priority by the Tea Board. "Consistent maintenance of high standards has become absolutely necessary to satisfy the requirements of an increasingly discerning market," he added.
