A Norwegian doctor specialised in mouth cancer fabricated research that was published in a major international scientific magazine, a spokesman for his Oslo hospital told AFP on January 15.
The doctor, Jon Sudbo, is well-known among mouth cancer specialists.
"He published an article in The Lancet in October last year whose data is totally false, actually totally fabricated," said Stein Vaaler, director of external relations at Sudbo's Oslo hospital.
Vaaler said the study described the association between mouth cancer and the use of anti-inflammatory drugs.
"His database had been completely fabricated on his computer," he said.
A Norwegian epidemologist from another part of the country discovered the data was false when using it for his own work, Vaaler said.
An expert medical inquiry into Sudbo's previous work, led by Swedish Professor Anders Ekbom from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, is due to begin soon.
Sudbo's Oslo hospital will decide on what measures to take after the investigation.
Sudbo published two other articles in 2001 and 2004 in the New England Journal of Medecine.
The US National Cancer Institute gave him a grant of 70 million Norwegian krona (10.5 million dollars, 8.7 million euros) for his research.
