Hasina for declaring Monga-hit areas as distressed zone
11/10/2005

RANGPUR, Nov 9 (BDNEWS): Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina demanded Wednesday of the government to declare the flood- and 'monga'-hit areas of the northern region as distressed areas and provide all the affected people adequate relief without any delay.
"Waive agricultural loans of the people in the areas and provide them with fresh loans," she urged the government.
Sheikh Hasina was addressing a huge public gathering at Mirbagh on the way to Kurigram.
She said the government is not recognising the sufferings of the 'monga'-affected people the northern region of the country because they fear that in that case they have to provide relief. The government is busy with looting the relief of the unfed and half fed 'monga'-hit people, she alleged.
Pointing her finger at the Prime Minister, the opposition leader said, "Come to see how much the people are suffering from hunger and poverty in the 'monga'-hit areas."
"You have seen the rule of 'paddy sheaf' and 'plough' and also the regime of 'boat'. Awami League always provides the people with food. On the other hand, BNP-Jamaat alliance government snatches the resources of the people. Decide now, after considering your experience under the different regimes, for whom will you cast your votes in the next general election," she asked the people.
