Khulna Newsprint Mill has finally been closed down Monday and 13 acres of its land transferred to the BSCIC authorities who want to develop an industrial park in the region, reports BDNEWS.
The Newsprint Mill, which started operation in the year 1957-58 on the bank of the Bhairab river with a land area of 13 acres, and the lay off of the mill was announced in November 2002 amid protest of workers and locals as the mill was incurring losses to the state.
M Shamsul Haque, Managing Director of the Mill, formally handed over the Mill area to the Bangladesh Small & Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) following an agreement with the latter. Director of the BSCIC, Khulna Zone, Khwaja Nazim Uddin signed the agreement on behalf of the BSCIC.
Mahbub Sobhan, Executive Engineer, BSCIC, Manager, Shamsul Haque, and Deputy Manager of BSCIC, Newsprint Mill Deputy Director Mujibur Rahman and Deputy Chief Accountant Shawkatuzzaman were also present on the occasion.
The workers of the Khulna Newsprint Mill Rokkha Committee demonstrated in front of the Mill led by Nizamur Rahman Lalu.
The government, on October 26 this year, at a review meeting at the Ministry of Industries on the progress of implementation of the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the fiscal 2005-06 decided to transfer the 13 acres of idle land of the Mill.
The Ministry later directed the Mill management to transfer the area to the BSCIC authorities.
