Banks' role in eradicating poverty vital, says BB governor

          The Annual Managers' Conference-2006 of The City Bank Limited was held in the city recently. Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Saleh Uddin Ahmed inaugurated the three-day conference.
In his speech the BB Governor said, "The City Bank has set an example coming out of the problem bank status".
He said for any institution, particularly in the banking sector, commitment, honesty and skills are very much important criteria. "Bank can play an important role in eradicating poverty from the country, he added.
Partex Group Chairman MA Hashem emphasised honesty for a good institution. He said if any employee dedicates himself to the institution, he should be rewarded. He has given some guidelines and suggestions for secure lending. He emphasised the "selection of borrowers and monitoring of advances" for keeping the good health of the loan portfolio.
On the second day of the conference ex-governor of Bangladesh Bank and Managing Director of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Fakhruddin Ahmed congratulated the employees for their efforts in salvaging the bank from the problem bank status.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Mirza Azizul Islam said the City Bank is an important factor in the capital market. He also said some important steps have been taken by the SEC including ensuring corporate governance in the capital market.
