Rajshahi Sugar Mills experiencing sugarcane crisis
2/7/2006

RAJSHAHI, Feb 6 (BDNEWS): The attempt of achieving the target in producing sugar in Rajshahi Sugar Mills has become uncertain due to inadequate supply of sugarcanes.
Sources said the farmers of the area have sold their sugarcane fields to the molasses traders before maturity of their sugarcane triggering shut down of several sugarcane buying centres in different areas of the district including Monigram, Bagha, Gorgori, Arani, Bankishore and Nimpara.
On a spot visit, it was found that innumerable sugarcane fields existed in the district, but the authorities of Rajshahi Sugar Mills had been experiencing the crisis of sugarcane.
The farmers said a section of unscrupulous molasses traders have bought most of the sugarcane fields before the matunity of sugarcane as molasses emerged as a profitable commodity.
The molasses traders have established several sugarcane crushers in the district to produce a huge quantity of molasses.
The administration said the farmers stopped to supply sugarcane to the sugar mill when they seized the sugarcane crushers.
When asked, Abdul Haque, the Managing Director of the Rajshahi Sugar Mills, said the target of sugar production was fixed at 12,750 tonnes this year but the crisis of sugarcane will hinder the target fixed for the year.
