20 workers injured as fire breaks out at Ctg factory
3/23/2006

CHITTAGONG, Mar 22 (UNB): A devastating fire that broke out in a sweater factory under Double Mooring Thana in the port city's Dewanhat area Tuesday night destroyed a huge amount of cotton and injured 14, including four fire-fighters.
Fire brigade sources said the blaze originated from an electric short circuit on the second floor of the Cristland Sweater Private Limited and soon engulfed the piles of cotton in that floor and then spread to the entire knitting section on the third floor at about 7.50pm.
On information, 15 fire fighting units from Agrabad and other areas rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after nine hours of frantic efforts at 4.20 am Wednesday.
Fire brigade sources said cotton worth Tk 10 million (1.0 crore) was damaged by the devastating fire. They said they were able to recover cotton worth Tk 50 million from the building.
Managing Director of the factory, however, claimed that cotton and other valuables worth Tk 50 million were damaged in the fire.
A huge crack developed in the building during the fire, which created panic among the shopkeepers of the market located in the ground floor of the building.
Meanwhile, at least 20 female workers of a garment factory were injured when a wall collapsed. They were trying to come out of their factory after a fire alarm created panic among them. The incident took place at Dewanhat Mistiri Para in the district Wednesday.
