The Cultural Affairs Ministry in collaboration with the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and the Embassy of Denmark has initiated a cultural festival focusing on cooperation between the two countries during March and April. The organisers of the festival at a press conference in National Press Club announced the programme Monday. Danish Ambassador Niels Severin Munk, Denmark Embassy official Hanne Tornager, Joint Secretary of Cultural Affairs Ministry M Masud, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Ahmad Nazir and noted artist Mostafa Monowar attended the press conference. On this occasion, the 200th birth anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen, legendary writer (especially of fairy tales) of Denmark, will be celebrated at Shilpakala Academy Auditorium on April 2, the birthday of the writer. On this very day in 1805 the writer was born and died in 1875. Hans Christian Andersen was also immensely popular in Bangladesh, the written paper of the press conference said. Bangladeshi readers will get the pleasure of two new translations of a selection of Hans Christian Andersen's most popular fairy tales. One book with twelve fairy tales has already been translated into Bangla. Another book containing fifty fairy tales will be launched at the Bookshop Etc., in Gulshan Avenue on April 2. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi artists have chosen to adapt some of the most popular fairy tales into drama and puppet theatre.
