7/17/2004

The overall flood situation in several eastern and northern districts is likely to further improve while it may deteriorate in about a dozen districts in in the middle during the next 24 hours, reports BSS.
Reports reaching in city Friday said floods in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvi Bazar, Sherpur and Netrkona districts marked an improvement. The situation in Rangpur, Dinajpur, Kurigram, Naogaon and Bogra is likely to further improve while it may remain unchanged in Gaibandha and Serajganj districts.
The situation may deteriorate in Jamalpur, Mymensingh, Rajbari Pabna, Kishoreganj, Manikganj, Nawabganj, Narshingdi, Madaripur, Shariatpur and Narayanganj districts as flood water is flowing down to the central parts of the country.
The situation in Bogra district remained unchanged . Flood waters affected 200 villages with at least 50,000 people in Dhunat Upazila of the district after erosion of the flood control embankment.
A total of 2.25 kms of flood control embankments were eroded by the flood waters, now submerging more areas in the district, local administration said. Deputy Minister for Relief Asadul Habib Dulu today visited the affected villages in Dhunat and the local people informed him that the embankment was washed away by the flood waters. They said it was not true that someone cut off the embankment.
