International Youth Day observed
8/13/2006

The International Youth Day was observed in the country Saturday with the focus on issues of youth and their role in the nation-building activities, reports BSS.
The day is being observed in Bangladesh since 2000 following the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 1999.
This year's theme of the day is "Tackling Poverty Together".
In observance of the day, the Department of Population Science of Dhaka University (DU) in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and in partnership with Dhaka University Journalists Association (DUJA) brought out a colourful procession from the main gate of the Arts Building of the university.
DU Vice Chancellor SMA Faiz led the procession, while UNFPA Representative to Bangladesh Dr Parnchai Suchit, Project Director of the department Prof AKM Nur-un-Nabi, Chairperson of the department Tahmina Gafur, Dean of the Social Science Faculty Harun-or-Rashid, DU Teachers' Association General Secretary Akhtaruzzaman and leaders of the DUJA took part in it.
After marching the campus, the processionists gathered at the footstep of the Aparajeya Bangla, where a brief rally was held.
Speakers at the rally called upon all to involve the youth community in development activities of the nation, identifying various development-oriented problems and prospects.
They also stressed the need for forging unity with the youths to fight poverty. As part of its two-day programme, the Department of Population Science of Dhaka University will organise a roundtable discussion in the Planning and Development Academy auditorium in the city today (Sunday).
Marking the day, the Youth Development Directorate and UNFPA jointly organised a seminar on `Creating Livelihood Opportunities to Tackle poverty and Empower Youth' at Juba Bhaban.
Youth and Sports Secretary Sirajul Islam was present at the seminar as the chief guest, while UNFPA National Officer Nur Mohammad presented the keynote paper.
Dhaka Cycling Club arranged a cycle march from Dhaka University Fine Arts Institute to Central Shaheed Minar at 11 am with a call to make cycling popular to reduce transport costs as well as for good health.
On the occasion, Bangladesh Jubo Union organised a signature collection campaign and a "symbolic missile destruction programme" in front of the National Museum at Shahbag, demanding an end to Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
